The Kalamazoo Gospel Mission has been serving homeless or abused men, women, and children since 1933. We provide for their basic needs as well as for their deeper emotional and spiritual needs. We make every effort to help them get back on their feet again by focusing on the whole person – spiritually, emotionally, physically, educationally, and socially. 48% of our clients are adult men, 30% adult women, and 22% children.

The Mission serves the homeless population of Kalamazoo, Michigan with a number of facilities:

Women’s Shelter:

The Women’s Shelter is divided into three parts: Single’s Dorm, Women’s Dorm and Family Shelter. This program offers stability and is a short-term solution for women, children and families looking for emergency housing. This program offers the basic needs of food, shelter, clothing and hygiene products, along with one-on-one staff support, free childcare and job and housing search assistance.

Men’s Shelter:

The Men’s Shelter has two parts. The Men’s Good Samaritan is a nightly shelter that provides safe lodging for homeless men. The Men’s dorm is an army-style sleeping arrangement, large enough for 88 men. This second program offers more stability and is a short-term solution for men looking for emergency housing or a fresh start. This program offers the basic needs of Good Samaritan, along with staff support and job and housing search assistance.

Long Term Programming:

Our long term programming helps assist individuals and families on the path to recovery. The program is separated into two tracks: job skills and addiction recovery. During the one to two year program, individuals take classes, participate in work training opportunities and receive the support of counselors and staff. In the second year of the program, some individuals even have the opportunity to take a paid leadership position that gives them the crucial job experience they need to transition out of the program.
